WEEKLY SUMMARY OF HONG KONG PRESS REPORTS & COMMENTS
May 25 31, 1947.
1. CHINA.
Attention was focussed on the peace proposals which had been submitted to the People's Political Council, and on the Central Government's broadcast invitation (on May 27) to the Communists to participate in peace discussions.
It was reported in the Wah Kiu Yat Po of May 29 that Mao Che-tung, Chairman of the Communist Party, had said that he would be willing to accept the invitation but that there must be sincerity on both sides. In the same paper on the same day Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek is quoted as saying that if there were one per cent sincerity on the Communists' part peace negotiations could be resumed at any time.
There were several references to corrupt administration as a main cause of the present troubles, for instance: "The populace under the National Government are suffering much under corrupt misgovernment, while those in the Communists areas are sick of forced labour and brutal struggles." (Wah Kiu Yat Po of May 30). The Sing Tao Jih Pao of May 30 reports an appeal, signed by 102 professors and lecturers of the Peiping and Ching Hua Universities calling Government's attention, amongst other things, to "the situation resulting from corrupt political administration.
The People's Political Council passed a resolution calling for the establishment of a new currency based on gold. On the following day, however, it was learnt from reliable sources that no change in the currency was possible. (Wah Kiu Yat Po of May 30 and 31).
